How is Ally different from Discord?
Ally is built on privacy and transparency. Your DMs are end-to-end encrypted — we physically cannot read them. Our code is open source so you can verify every claim. We make money from optional premium subscriptions, not from your data.
Will free features ever become paid?
No. A feature that's free today stays free forever. We will add new premium features, but we will never move existing free features behind a paywall. That's a commitment, not a marketing line.
What does "open source" actually mean here?
Every security-critical component — clients, server, encryption library, SDKs — is published on GitHub under open licenses. Independent researchers can audit the code, verify our encryption works as described, and hold us accountable.
Is my data really encrypted?
Direct messages use end-to-end encryption with a Double Ratchet protocol. Messages are encrypted on your device and can only be decrypted by the intended recipient. Our servers store only ciphertext — we don't have the keys.
Can I self-host Ally?
Self-hosting is on our roadmap. The server code will be available under AGPL-3.0, and we'll provide Docker Compose configurations for easy deployment. Federation between instances is part of our long-term vision.
How does Ally make money without ads?
Premium subscriptions. For $4.99/month, users get cosmetic upgrades, higher upload limits, and HD media. Core communication — messaging, voice, servers, encryption — is free forever.
